AutoQuiz V1: When David beat Goliath

Penned by: Rahul Bhargava

ITM University is a renowned institute in Central India when it comes to Technical Education. They have a great Infrastructure to support students not just to excel at academics, but also at honing their overall personality. Coincidently, we were just a bunch of first-year students, when ITM University decided to launch a city-wide Auto Quiz competition, inspired by Mahindra AQ.

We were already so pumped up from our last success and were beaming with confidence to make a mark outside our college premises. It was November 2013. Just like before, we filled the form, and one more friend of ours, Prakhar Agrawal joined us to fulfil the team requirements. We all were very excited for the Quiz day.

The Quiz Day:

We reached the ITM University campus, and to be honest, though we were excited to play, we also felt a little nervous seeing the scale of the crowd that had come to participate. There were hundreds of teams out there vying for 1 trophy. Dozens of them were from RJIT itself, mostly seniors. And that was quite enough to intimidate newbies. But somewhere we still had this feeling that we will be through.

The Speciality and a key difference of this Quiz from the previous one were that here there were multiple rounds, and after each round, a fixed number of teams had to bid adieu. The First Round was the main elimination round from which only 20 teams could proceed. It was a Logo Identification round, in which the teams had to identify the logos against the timer. We did well and qualified for the next round. The next round, was again an elimination round, in which a set of questions had to be answered. We passed the scrutiny again.

From here on, started the main rounds, which ranged from direct questions to topical questions, etc. Before the start of this round, there were 16 teams left, and after each round last 4 would leave. We somehow managed to stay in the top 4 until the last round. All of the teams from our College were eliminated, except us. But, the worrying thing at this stage was the score difference. Before the start of the final round, the difference between our Score and the Top team's score was 50 points. Though we were not appearing like the favourites, we were in no mood for consolation either.

To our delight, the last round was the Rapid Fire round, wherein, a team has to answer as many questions as they can in a fixed amount of time. In this case, the Time limit was 1 minute or 60 seconds. And guess what, we answered 8 questions out of 9, correctly!! That's like listening to a question and answering it in less than 7 seconds!! With this unimaginable feat, we finished on top with a lead of 20 points. It was a surreal experience for us. These moments are just unforgettable, I mean, I'm getting goosebumps while writing this.

The kind of appreciation and reception we received the next day in college from Teachers and Seniors alike, just made the moment far merrier. I still remember that a senior went on to mark, perhaps a compliment on our formal attire, that They came like Professionals, and they won like Professionals
